This artwork, Polar Night, 2020, is a new addition to a series called “Notes on Hide”, initiated in 2017. Reindeer hide, sinew thread and woollen fabric utilised in this series, are all materials traditionally used in doudji, Sami handicraft. Here transformed to a manner of minimalist abstract painting. Polar Night is the period of darkness during which the sun stays below the horizon, only occurring above the Arctic Circle as well as below the Antarctic Circle.

Carola Grahn is a Sámi visual artist from Jokkmokk, Sápmi, and completed her MFA at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 2013. She is represented in the collections at Statens Konstråd and Konstmuseet i Norr.
